Crestline Yard was built by the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne & Chicago Railway around 1863 and significantly improved in the early Twenties by the Pennsy to speed Chicago shipments and get rid of east and westbound freight classification at Fort Wayne. Crestline is situated about halfway between Pittsburgh and Chicago in Crestline, Ohio, and could hold over 1,600 vehicles. In 1849, Pennsy officials developed plans to assemble a restore facility at Altoona. Construction began in 1850, and shortly, a number of small buildings housed a machine store, woodworking shop, blacksmith store, locomotive restore store, and foundry. These services were later demolished to make room for persevering with expansion. As of 2020 the only operable Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotive is class B4a engine # 643, built in July 1901 in Altoona.
